(Wed 23 Jul 08) The Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Style has been named as the first overall winner of the What Car?/Warranty Direct Green Awards.
The Focus was voted number one in the Small Family Car category, and went on to receive the overall award thanks to its combination of high fuel economy and low CO2 emissions (62.7mpg and 119g/km), lack of expensive fuel-saving technology, family-friendliness, driving experience and safety (five stars for adult occupant protection in the Euro NCAP test). Other category winners were the Fiat 500 1.2 Pop (Supermini), Citroen C5 1.6 HDi VTR+ (Family Car), BMW 318d ES (Executive Car), Citroen C4 Picasso Seven-Seat 1.6 HDi SX (MPV), Honda CR-V CDTi ES (4x4), MINI Cooper S (Sports Car) and Audi A8 2.8 V6 FSI SE (Luxury Car). In addition, Toyota won the Technology Award for its development of plug-in hybrid technology (due to become available on the Prius in 2010) while BMW was given the Editor's Award for its EfficientDynamics programme of fuel saving.
