Porsche 911 Targa

(Mon 28 Jul 08)

The next-generation Porsche 911 Targa will go on sale in the UK on October 25 at prices starting from £72,980.

Porsche 911 61 - Targa.

That amount will buy you the Targa 4, which comes with a 345bhp 3.6-litre engine; for £80,270 you can have the Targa 4S with its 385bhp 3.8-litre engine. Both come with four-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, but as a £2338 optional extra you can replace the gearbox with Porsche's seven-speed PDK electronically-controlled double-clutch transmission.

PDK makes quite a difference, reducing the 0-62mph time of each car by 0.3 seconds. This means that a PDK-fitted Targa 4 is not only £5000 cheaper than a manual Targa 4S, but it's also quicker in this acceleration test (4.9 seconds to 5.0 seconds). The Targa 4S PDK is of course the fastest of the lot at 4.7 seconds.

The main point of the Targa is of course the opportunity to enjoy open-air motoring. As with the previous model, the new Targa has both a glass roof and a glass tailgate; to go alfresco you make the roof slide backwards beneath the tailgate, a process which takes seven seconds. There's also a sunblind which covers the inside of the roof and can be controlled independently.

In terms of styling, the new Targa is very similar to the previous one. Modifications are limited to the extreme front and rear, and include new bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime driving lights.
