(Thu 05 Jun 08) Italian company Kivi will shortly unveil what it says is the world's first wheelchair conversion for a mini-MPV.
Kivi has chosen the Daihatsu Materia for the conversion, which allows the driver's seat, or the front passenger seat, or both to be replaced by wheelchairs. The wheelchairs are secured by an electric tie-down which can be operated by the user without assistance. A third wheelchair can be installed in the rear, though if that isn't required there is a conventional seat which can be used or folded away as required. Kivi can also supply equipment to allow the driver to control the car using one hand. The demonstration car, called the Kivi Materia Motion, will have its UK premiere at the Mobility Roadshow, which takes place at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry on June 12-14.
