New Technology For Porsche 911

(Fri 06 Jun 08)

The new Porsche 911, which goes on sale in the UK on July 5, features two important new pieces of technology.

Porsche 911 59.

The first, which is standard across the range, is the direct fuel injection system introduced to the Cayenne last year. The benefits include quicker throttle response, an increase in maximum power (345bhp in the 3.6-litre engine, 385bhp in the 3.8) and improved combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions (29.4mpg and 225g/km respectively for the 3.6).

The other big news on the technical front is the introduction of the new seven-speed twin-clutch PDK gearbox, available as an option. Lighter than the Tiptronic S which it replaces, it also provides better acceleration than the manual box, and if you also specify the Sport Chrono Package Plus, which includes launch control, the 0-62mph time falls to just 4.3 seconds.

Porsche has upgraded the standard PSM stability management system, which now includes the Brake Pre-Filling and Brake Assistant functions previously available only on the Carrera 4 and Turbo. The audio control system has a simplified control panel with a larger display (now with touchscreen technology) and is compatible with Bluetooth and with external audio sources. As an option, customers can also have a television which receives both analogue and digital signals.

The basic shape has not been changed at all, and in fact the only differences to the exterior are new wheel designs, larger mirrors and LED daytime driving lights. Bi-xenon headlights are standard, and dynamic corner lighting is available as an option.

The 911 Carrera with the 3.6-litre engine costs £63,070 in standard form and £70,360 as a convertible, while the equivalent prices for the 3.8-litre Carrera S are £70,360 (yes, the same figure again) and £77,650. In each case, the price includes a vehicle tracking system with Thatcham Category 5 approval and the cost of a Porsche Driving Experience course.
