The Environmental Transport Association has named the Toyota Yaris as the Green Car of the Year for 2008.

Toyota also had three other cars in the overall top ten (the Prius was third, the Aygo sixth and the Auris ninth), while the RAV4 2.2 D-4D was hailed as the greenest off-roader.

Apart from the Toyotas, other top ten cars were the Honda Civic Hybrid, Renault Modus, Citroen C1, Peugeot 107, Renault Clio and Suzuki Swift. Category winners other than those already mentioned were the BMW 320d (Large Family), BMW 520d (Executive), Peugeot 207 SW Outdoor 1.6 HDi 90 (MPV), Jaguar XJ 2.7 diesel (Luxury) and Vauxhall Tigra Convertible 1.3 CDTi (Sports).

The worst performer in the survey was the Dodge SRT-10, followed by the Lamborghini Murciélago and various Ferraris and Bentleys. However, as ETA Director Andrew Davis says, "The big problem is not the Dodge SRT-10s and Lamborghinis because there are not many of them on the road. The concern is that people are buying cars that are much too big for their real needs."
