(Mon 23 Jun 08) Ford has introduced its new twin-clutch semi-manual gearbox, known as Powershift, to 2.0 TDCi turbo diesel versions of the Focus and C-MAX.
The concept is the same as that used by the Volkswagen Group, where it's known as either DSG or (in the case of Audi) S-tronic, and by Mitsubishi for the Lancer Evolution X. However, whereas until now it's the very rapid gearchanges that have been promoted most strongly, Ford is marketing Powershift as an alternative to a conventional automatic, with better fuel economy and therefore lower CO2 emissions. Ford also points out, though, that drivers who are in a sporty mood can switch to manual mode rather than leave the transmission to decide for itself which gear to use next. Prices for the Powershift models start at £18,195 for the Focus 2.0 TDCi Zetec three-door and £19,895 for the C-MAX 2.0 TDCI Zetec five-door.
