Hybrids Too Quiet?

(Thu 26 Jun 08)

The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association has a problem with hybrid cars. Nothing to do with environmental issues - it's just that hybrids are so quiet that blind and partially sighted people don't know they're coming, which could have disastrous effects if they are using their hearing to judge when it is safe to cross a road.

The charity is recommending that further research and development is needed to improve the situation, and is in fact doing that just itself. In association with Lotus Engineering, it is working on a noise synthesizer which could be fitted to a hybrid car either at the point of manufacture or as an aftermarket add-on.
