(Fri 27 Jun 08) Nissan will reach 24-hour UK production when it launches a third shift at its Sunderland plant this Sunday (June 29).
The extra shift, which has resulted in the creation of 800 new jobs, is devoted to increasing production of the Qashqai from 4500 to 6100 units per week. This is in anticipation of increased demand for the Qashqai, given that the new seven-seat +2 version (see previous story) is due to go on sale across Europe in September. The extra capacity also makes room for the Micra replacement which will go into production at Sunderland in 2010.
