Virtual Jaguar Land Rover Design

(Fri 27 Jun 08)

Jaguar Land Rover has announced the opening of a new "virtual reality centre" at its design and engineering headquarters in Gaydon.

Jaguar Land Rover Virtual Reality Design Centre.

The idea is to save time and money by doing away with physical models. Instead, the designer works in a large room, wearing 3D glasses and surrounded by four screens on which images are rear-projected by eight Sony projectors whose resolution is four times better than that produced on high-definition television. The designer will be able to see and interact with life-size three-dimensional models which can be altered very quickly as required.

One of the companies involved in the £2 million project is Midlands-based HoloVis International Ltd. "We spent just over 18 months working closely with Jaguar Land Rover and our chosen system partners to design, develop, test and benchmark the proposed solution prior to the project being approved," says Managing Director Stuart Hetherington.

"This gave everyone the confidence in the unique technological solution we were going to create, as well as our capability in delivering such an advanced turn-key system of this nature. This really is a world's first in this industry and we're proud to have delivered this for such a prestigious client."
