(Wed 05 Mar 08) The visually striking Megane Coupé concept on Renault's stand at the Geneva Show is intended as a preview for a small coupé due to go into production at some unspecified time in the future.
It would be easy at this point to make a prediction which might go embarrassingly wrong, but even so we're not expecting that the car which eventually goes on sale will include the defining feature of the concept - a pair of two-part "dragonfly wing" doors which open upwards and add an extra dose of drama to the car's looks. The dramatic interior is stuffed (as is often the case with concept cars these days) with all sorts of audio and visual equipment. Less conventionally, it's locked and unlocked using a Samsung F700 mobile phone which acts in the same was as the Renault Card does on production models. The concept uses a 200bhp two-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a six-speed manual gearbox, giving a 0-62mph time of 7.2 seconds and combined fuel economy of around 43mpg. Even if the doors don't make it to production, the oily bits at least stand a good chance of reaching the showrooms.
