(Fri 07 Mar 08) As previewed in a separate news story, BMW has given the X5-based Vision EfficientDynamics concept its world debut at the Geneva Show, and has also come up with some intriguing figures about fuel economy and CO2 emissions.
Nearly all of BMW's output now comes with EfficientDynamics technology, including automatic stop/start and brake energy regeneration. This means that in 2008, according to current estimates, 700,000 new BMWs with these features will be sold across Europe. As recently as two years ago, there was no such thing as an EfficientDynamics BMW. The company estimates that, compared with 2006, its new models will save more than 33 million gallons of fuel, equating to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 373,000 tonnes, of which the UK accounts for 54,000 tonnes. The total saving is equivalent to the amount of energy required by the citizens of Geneva for four years. This has been recognised by the 40 millions readers of the magazines in the Auto 1 group, whose votes have resulted in BMW being presented with the Auto 1 Innovation award. "We can think of no more worthy winner for this year's award," says spokesman David Johns. "BMW's Efficient Dynamics is not just a brilliant way of saving fuel, but an important step towards reducing the CO2 emissions of the UK's vehicle fleet."
