(Fri 14 Mar 08) Alfa Romeo has revealed its new C-segment car, which will go on sale in Europe in July and reach the UK early next year.
The new model is roughly the same size as the current 147, but it has a very different name. It's being called Mi.To, which stands for Milan - "the city of design that brought the car's style into being", as Alfa puts it - and Turin, where it's going to be built. (No, there isn't a spelling mistake there. "To" is short for "Torino", the proper Italian name for what we call Turin.) At first, the Mi.To will use a variety of familiar turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engines and 1.9-litre diesels with power outputs ranging from 90bhp to 155bhp. More powerful units will be introduced later on. The Mi.To will also have a three-mode behaviour system, with Normal, Dynamic and All-Weather settings for the engine, brakes, steering, suspension and gearbox. Performance and driving fun are high on the list of priorities, but Alfa also says that the Mi.To has been designed "to obtain a top Euro NCAP crash safety rating in the future".
