(Tue 25 Mar 08) Audi will be introducing A4, A5 and Q5 models with the twin-clutch S tronic gearbox towards the end of this year.
We're not talking about the well-known six-speed S tronic (known elsewhere within the Volkswagen Group as DSG). This is the more recently-developed seven-speed version, which - unlike the six-speed - can be fitted to cars whose engines are mounted along the centreline of the car rather than across the front axle. When Volkswagen first announced the seven-speed gearbox, the suggestion was made that it was suitable only for less powerful cars. That seems to have changed, since according to Audi the greatest amount of torque it can handle is just over 400lb/ft, which means it could be used in even the sportiest models.
