(Wed 07 May 08) Ten million Vauxhall Astras have been produced since the first model emerged from the production line back in 1980, and by way of celebration there will be a distinct Astra flavour to the annual open day at the Vauxhall Heritage Centre in Luton.
That day is June 8, and probably the most remarkable Astra on display will be the exceptionally rare supercharged 4S rally car (pictured), built for an international category called Group S which was abandoned before a single event was run under those regulations. There will also be one of the British Touring Car Championship Astras, along with a string of standard production models going back to the original Mk1, and other Heritage Centre cars including a 1903 model, a Lotus Carlton and a droop-snoot Firenza. The open day runs from 10am to 5pm and entry is free. There will also be a free bus service running between the Heritage Centre and the Luton Festival of Transport which takes place on the same day at Stockwood Park.
