(Tue 20 May 08) Mitsubishi has launched a Walkinshaw Performance special edition version of its L200 pickup. The name is a reference to Tom Walkinshaw, who has competed with great success in Touring and sports car racing (he was behind the Le-Mans winning Jaguars of the late 1980s, for example) and was also boss of the now defunct Arrows F1 team.
Walkinshaw's version of the L200 has a lot of extra equipment, such as 20" wheels, leather seats, DVD satellite navigation with a 7" screen, cruise control, a 420W sound system, a CD autochanger, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity and stainless steel fuel filler cap, tailgate cover and doorhandle covers. It can also come with a Rallitronic engine upgrade which boosts the maximum power of the 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine to 166bhp, but this is optional since not everyone will want the extra performance. There are issues of tax and congestion charging too, since the standard engine emits less than 225g/km of CO2 but the tuned version doesn't. Prices range from £21,499 for a Walkinshaw Performance Double Cab manual (without Rallitronic) to £22,799 for the automatic (with Rallitronic). For a further £2595 plus VAT you can order an extra upgrade kit for fitment to L200s which have already been registered. The kit includes a completely revised rear suspension (five-link with Koni coilovers, if you want to talk technical), revised suspension bushes, a stainless steel twin-tailpipe exhaust and an anti-corrosion protection system.
