(Mon 17 Nov 08) The Vauxhall Insignia has been voted Car of the Year for 2009, but by only a single point. The jury, made up of 59 journalists across Europe, gave the Insignia a total of 321 points, while its closest rival, the Ford Fiesta, was awarded 320 points.
This is not unfamiliar territory for Ford. In 2001 the then-new Mondeo lost out to the Alfa Romeo 147, again by just one point. The list of 37 eligible cars (meaning models introduced within the previous 12 months and on sale in at least five European countries) was whittled down to seven in October before the final voting started. The others finished in the order Volkswagen Golf (223 points), Citroen C5 (198), Alfa Romeo MiTo (148), Skoda Superb (144) and Renault Megane (121). |
