Economical Toyota Auris

(Wed 19 Nov 08)

Toyota has replaced the 1.4-litre petrol version of the Auris hatchback with a new model which seems better in every respect.

Toyota Auris 40.

The 1.4 engine has been removed to make way for a 1.3-litre unit which is physically smaller and lighter and also produces slightly more power (100bhp rather than the previous 96bhp). This is also the first Toyota to be sold in Europe with Stop&Start technology, which means that the engine shuts down when the car is stationary and the gearbox is in neutral, and automatically restarts when the driver presses the clutch.

Along with the introduction of a six-speed gearbox, this has a dramatic effect on the official fuel economy figures. The combined figure is 48.7mpg (it was 40.9mpg for the 1.4), while CO2 emissions drop from 163g/km to 135g/km. Annual car tax is reduced by around £65 as a result.

Known as the Auris 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start, the car is on sale now with a choice of three- and five-door body styles and T2, TR and T3 trim levels. Prices range from £12,705 to £14,205.
