Low-CO2 Mercedes C-Class

(Mon 24 Nov 08)

The latest in an increasingly long line of extra-efficient cars on the market is the Mercedes-Benz C180 Kompressor BlueEfficiency.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class 49 - C180 Kompressor BlueEfficiency.

This car replaces the existing C180 Kompressor and has the same maximum power output of 156bhp, but official fuel consumption on the combined cycle has improved by over 10% to 44.8mpg, while CO2 emissions have dropped from 167g/km to 149g/km. The latter figure means that the car is now in the 17% company car tax band, rather than 21% as before, while in terms of VED the car is down two bands to Band C, bringing a further saving of £50 per year.

The improvements have come about through the use of low-rolling resistance tyres, smaller door mirrors (to reduce aerodynamic drag) and power steering which is activated only when it is needed. Drivers are encouraged to be more economical still thanks to two indicators, one showing fuel consumption and the other suggesting when to change gear.

The C180 Kompressor BlueEfficiency costs £23,350 in saloon form and £24,757 as an estate.
