(Thu 02 Oct 08) The introduction earlier this year of the new-generation SEAT Ibiza has meant a temporary end to the existence of the high-performance Ibiza Cupra. But that's all about to change, as one of the new models on SEAT's stand at the Paris Show confirms.
It is, of course, the new Cupra, which will reach the UK in the first half of 2009. (Don't ask about the price. SEAT hasn't confirmed it yet.) Based on the three-door SportCoupé - which is being marketed as a more sporty version of the normal five-door hatch, even though there's hardly any mechanical difference between the ranges - the Cupra will be the only Ibiza to use the Volkswagen Group's 1.4-litre TSI engine, which uses both a supercharger and a turbocharger and produces a maximum of 178bhp. The new car is actually slightly slower than the previous Ibiza Cupra, with a top speed of 140mph and a 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds, but with plenty of power available from virtually any engine speed it will probably feel quite a bit quicker. Combined fuel economy is 42mpg and the CO2 rating is 159g/km, so it will cost £150 to tax in 2009 and £155 in 2010. As you'd expect, the new Cupra is festooned with electronic devices designed to stop you doing anything silly. The most impressive of these is XDS, which acts in conjunction with the ABS and traction control systems to give the effect of a limited-slip differential with none of the weight, complexity or expense.
