(Thu 02 Oct 08) It's not ready for production yet, but Vauxhall has nevertheless displayed the ecoFLEX version of the new Insignia at the Paris Show.
The ecoFLEX uses a 158bhp two-litre turbo diesel engine which gives it a maximum speed of 135mph and 0-62mph time of 9.5 seconds. More importantly, though, it has several features designed to improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions, including a ride height 10mm lower than standard, extra aerodynamic work (Vauxhall claims that this is its least air-resistant car ever) and special Michelin tyres. Exact figures aren't available yet, but Vauxhall is expressing confidence that the ecoFLEX will have a CO2 rating "well below 140g/km, which will put it in Band E of the new VED system to be introduced next year and lead to annual car tax payments of £110. The car will be sold in saloon and hatchback body styles in the second half of 2009, at prices which will be announced nearer the time. |
