(Thu 02 Oct 08) PSA Peugeot Citroen is giving full details of its new diesel-electric hybrid powertrain for the first time at the Paris Show.
Known as HyMotion4, and fitted to the Citroen Hypnos (pictured) and Peugeot Prologue concept cars, the system is unusual in that the two-litre turbo diesel engine drives the front wheels while the rear axle is looked after by the eletric motor. Total power output is 200bhp, but it goes with impressive fuel economy and low CO2 emissions - 109g/km in the case of the Prologue (which is also a study for a new MPV based on the 308) and 120g/km for the coupé/saloon/SUV crossover Hypnos. The system also includes a Start&Stop facility which shuts off the engine when the cars are idling in traffic.
