(Mon 13 Oct 08) A Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D TR has achieved the best fuel economy in this year's Fleetworld/ALD Automotive MPG Marathon. Driven by Gary Luton and former Cadillac PR boss and sometime rally driver Andrew Andersz, the Yaris recorded 84.66mpg - just enough to beat a Mazda2 diesel which managed 84.52mpg. A Citroen C1 diesel came a close third on 84.32mpg.
Citroen can also claim the highest score achieved by a van - 84.09mpg in the case of a Citroen Nemo 1.4 HDi driven by Van Fleet World magazine editor John Kendall and Dr Paul Nieuwenhuis of the Cardiff Business School. The best performance by any petrol-engined vehicle was 82.39mpg from a Toyota Aygo. The MPG Marathon also honours the car which beats its official combined economy figure by the greatest margin, and this year the award went to the Corvette Z06. According to the EU test procedure, the Corvette drinks fuel at the rate of 19.2mpg, but Press Association journalist Richard Hammond - no relation to the TV presenter - coaxed an astonishing 30.96mpg out of the 198mph supercar. |
