(Mon 13 Oct 08) Toyota's new city car, the iQ, is available to order in the UK now and will start arriving at dealerships in January.
The iQ uses a revised version of Toyota's one-litre three-cylinder petrol engine which, in conjunction with a five-speed manual gearbox, gives the car official combined fuel economy of 65.7mpg and a CO2 rating of 99g/km, so it's exempt from road tax. In place of the manual gearbox you can have Multdrive continuously variable transmission which increases CO2 emissions to 110g/km. Car tax is therefore £35 now and £20 from next April, assuming nobody fiddles with the proposed VED rankings before then. There are two trim levels, both of which include an impressive amount of equipment: the basic iQ 15" gets alloy wheels, manual air-conditioning, remote central locking, rear privacy glass, a six-speaker radio/CD/MP3 sound system with auxiliary socket for portable players, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, leather trim for the steering wheel and gearknob, a tonneau cover for the luggage compartment and - as mentioned in a previous story - the world's first rear window airbag. The iQ2 has high-gloss alloy wheels, foglights, bi-halogen headlights with smoked glass, retractable door mirrors, climate control air-conditioning, smart entry, push-button start, automatic headlights and wipers and an auto-dimming interior mirror.
Prices start at £9495 for the iQ manual, to which you can add £1000 each for Multidrive and the iQ2 trim level (so, to save you the arithmetic, the iQ2 Multidrive costs £11,495). Leather upholstery costs an extra £700, while £950 will get you satellite navigation with Bluetooth and iPod integration. Metallic paint - White Pearl, Black or Deep Amethyst - will also be an extra-cost option, but Toyota is offering it for free if you place your order before March 1. |
