Subaru Forester Diesel

(Tue 09 Sep 08)

The turbo diesel version of the Subaru Forester, which is expected to become Subaru's most popular model in the UK very shortly, is available now at prices starting from £20,295.

Subaru Forester 23 - 2.0D XC.

The most important part of the car is of course the 145bhp two-litre engine itself - the first diesel ever designed in the "boxer" four-cylinder layout - which made its first appearance earlier this year in the Legacy and Outback. This unit pushes the Forester from 0-60mph in 10 seconds and gives it a top speed of 116mph.

Combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions for the entry-level 2.0D X are 44.8mpg and 167g/km respectively - by far the best figures ever for a Forester. The XC (pictured) and XSn models, which have different tyres, manage 44.1mpg and 170g/km. In every case, the Forester falls into the current VED Band E, and will move into Band H when the new system comes into force next year. What that means in real money is that every Forester diesel will cost £170 to tax now, £175 in 2008 and £180 in 2009.

Subaru Forester 24 - 2.0D XC Rear Side.

Although the 2.0D X is the cheapest model, Subaru expects that the most popular will be the £22,495 XC, which has larger wheels, roof rails, a roof spoiler, a sunroof, high-intensity headlights and a premium audio system with 6-CD autochanger as standard. The range-topping XSn gets satellite navigation, leather upholstery, an electrically-adjustable driver's seat and a push-button starter, and costs £25,495. Insurance is Group 9 for the X and XC and Group 10 for the XSn.
