(Fri 19 Sep 08) Chevrolet will be displaying four new cars at the Paris Show next month.
The one with the most immediate relevance to the UK market is the Cruze (pictured above), a four-door coupé which will go on sale here next spring. It will be sold with 1.6- and 1.8-litre petrol engines, but neither of these is likely to be as popular as the two-litre turbo diesel.
The Orlando is Chevrolet's first seven-seat MPV. The exact vehicle to be revealed in Paris is strictly a show car, but a production-ready version is due to make its debut in 2009.
The Volt is production-ready now, though it won't actually go on sale until 2010. It's a hybrid, but not of the kind we're most familiar with; in this case, the electric motor runs continuously, while the petrol engine is brought into play only when the battery charge falls below a certain level. One thing you can definitely say about the Volt is that it does not look like a conventional electric vehicle - in fact it's a full-sized four-seater saloon, with what Chevrolet describes as "excellent luggage and passenger space".
Interesting stuff, but the really iconic Chevrolet at Paris will be the new Camaro. In design, it's a tribute to the original 1967 Camaro, but it has a modern 6.2-litre V8 petrol engine producing nearly 400bhp. US sales will start next year, and the car will arrive in Europe in 2010. |
