(Wed 24 Sep 08) Audi has sprung a surprise with the new S4, which will make its world debut at the Paris Show.
Gone is the previous V8 engine, and in its place comes a 328bhp three-litre supercharged direct petrol injection V6. The saloon with manual transmission shares the same limited 155mph top speed as its V8 equivalent, but it accelerates from rest to 62mph half a second quicker (5.1 seconds) and has a vastly improved combined fuel economy figures of 29.1mpg, well up on the V8's 21.2mpg. CO2 emissions are also down to 255g/km. With the seven-speed twin-clutch S tronic transmission (known elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group as DSG), the S4 saloon is even more economical at 30.1mpg, and CO2 emissions fall still further to 219g/km. The new S4 will be available to order in the UK in November, with customer deliveries due to start next April. Saloon and Avant body styles will be offered, and prices will start at around £36,000.
