(Wed 05 Aug 09) Mercedes has published details of the new E-Class estate, which will go on sale early in 2010. The rear seat backrests can be folded individually from the back of the car, and when they're both down the E-Class has a very impressive load capacity of 1950 litres.
Pricing has not yet been confirmed for UK models, but Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that we'll have a choice of three trim levels called SE, Avantgarde and Sport. Engines available from launch will include two 2.2-litre turbo diesels (producing 170bhp in the E 220 CDI and 204bhp in the E 250 CDI), and a 183bhp 1.8-litre petrol, all of which will come with six-speed manual gearboxes.
A 204bhp 1.8 petrol will have five-speed automatic transmission, and there's a seven-speed automatic for both the 292bhp 3.5-litre V6 E 350 CGI and the range-topping E 500, whose 5.5-litre V8 produces a maximum of 388bhp. If economy and CO2 emissions are high on your priority list you probably won't go for that one but choose one of the diesels. Both have official figures of 48.7mpg and 150g/km (putting them in the £125-per year VED Band F), though in real life we'd expect the 170bhp version to use less fuel.
