| Mitsubishi Ends Dakar Campaign | ||
|
(Wed 04 Feb 09) Mitsubishi has announced that it is to pull out of the Dakar Rally, the Dakar Series and all similar cross-country events.
As with the decision to withdraw from the British Rally Championship, the given reason is that the global economic situation has made it necessary for Mitsubishi "to focus its resources more tightly". It probably didn't help that Mitsubishi's attempt to become the first manufacturer to win the Dakar Rally running on diesel ended with three cars retiring and a fourth limping home in 10th place (as previously reported, Volkswagen took the honours instead). Despite this disappointment, Mitsubishi's record on Dakar is second to none. It has won the event 12 times in 26 attempts, and managed a run of seven consecutives victories before Volkswagen spoiled the party in 2009. |
