(Fri 20 Oct 09) Honda reached a milestone earlier this month when it sold its 300,000th hybrid model, just over nine years after the original Insight was launched in Japan.
The total figure to the end of January is 300,740, and well over two-thirds of them have found owners in North America. That region snapped up nearly all of the first-generation Insights and 191,493 of the 255,249 Civic Hybrids and IMAs, and was the only market where a hybrid version of the Accord was sold. If all goes well - and in its current situation Honda has to hope that it will - those figures should soon look paltry. The estimated yearly sales of the new Insight are 200,000 (equivalent to nearly the whole seven years' worth of hybrid Civic sales), with 30,000 going to Europe.
