More Volvo DRIVe Models

(Tue 24 Feb 09)

Volvo is extending its range of low-CO2 DRIVe models from three to seven. The DRIVe designation is currently being used for versions of the C30, S40 and V50 with Volvo's 109bhp 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine and Stop/Start system, and the same unit (but without Stop/Start) is also being introduced to the V70 and S80.

Along with the engine, the V70 and S80 DRIVes have revised gear ratios, low rolling resistance tyres and tweaked aerodynamics, giving them combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 57.6mpg and 129g/km. Those are impressive figures for such large vehicles, but don't expect much performance from them.

The other two DRIVe newcomers come in the XC60 and XC70 ranges. In these cases the 175bhp 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine is mated to a front-wheel drive transmission rather than the more usual 4x4. This won't help either car's off-road capability, but it does mean that combined fuel economy improves to 47.1mpg, while CO2 emissions fall to 159g/km - just below the Writing Down Allowance threshold for company cars which is due to be adopted in April this year.

The new DRIVe cars will go on sale in the UK this summer. Pricing will be announced nearer the launch date.
