(Mon 12 Jan 09) A Jaguar XFR powered by the new supercharged five-litre V8 engine (see separate story) has become officially the company's fastest car, having reached a speed of just over 225mph.
The speed was achieved at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, home of many Land Speed Record attempts. The car was driven by Paul Gentilozzi, owner of the Rocketsports Racing team which successfully campaigned an XKR in the Trans Am series from 2001 to 2006. Rocketsports modified the engine to produce more than the standard 510bhp, but the internals remained unaltered, as did the six-speed automatic gearbox. The new record - 225.675mph, to be precise - beats the previous mark of 217.1mph set by an XJ220 back in 1992. That speed was also the highest achieved by any production car until the McLaren F1 came along. |
