(Thu 02 Jul 09) BMW has confirmed the UK pricing and specifications of the X1, its smallest SUV yet, which will go on sale here on October 24.
On that date the range will consist of just three versions. The cheapest, at £24,205, is the sDrive20d SE, which has a 177bhp two-litre turbo diesel engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and an Auto Start-Stop system which cuts out the engine when it isn't needed. Its top speed is limited to 127mph, the 0-62mph time is 8.1 seconds, combined fuel economy is 53.3mpg and CO2 emissions are 139g/km. For £25,510 you can have the xDrive20d SE, which is similar in all respects except that it comes with four-wheel drive. Performance isn't greatly affected but combined economy falls to 48.7mpg and the CO2 rating rises to 153g/km, though on the plus side you do get greater off-road capability. The top model in the range is the xDrive23d SE, costing £29,055. This has the same engine as the others but in this case it produces 204bhp and comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox, four-wheel drive and no Auto Start-Stop. The top speed is still 127mph, and the other key figures are 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds, 44.8mpg combined and 167g/km. Two more X1s will arrive in December, both using a 143bhp version of the diesel engine. At that point the sDrive18d SE will become the base model, and it will also be the cheapest to run with 54.3mpg combined economy and 136g/km CO2 emissions. If you've spotted the pattern in the naming system you'll realise that this car has rear-wheel drive, and you won't need us to tell you that the xDrive18d SE is the four-wheel drive version of the same model. The 18s will cost £22,660 and £23,940 respectively. In other markets there will be petrol-fuelled versions of the X1, but the overwhelming preference for diesel among UK buyers of BMW's X range has persuaded the company to stick with diesel in this case. |
