(Wed 29 Jul 09) Fiat has reached a landmark with the production of its 1,500,000th Panda model. Well, actually, no. More Pandas than that have been built, but the figure refers to the current version, which has been coming off Fiat's production line at its Tychy factory in Poland since 2003.
The Panda are by no means the most popular car of its type in the UK, but it is tremendously successful throughout continental Europe, and has been exported further afield. 93% of cars leave Tychy to be sold in other markets, including Japan, South Africa and Mexico. Tychy is due to create a new personal best this year by building a record 285,000 Pandas out of a production total of nearly 600,000 cars, including the 500 and its close relative, the Ford Ka.
