(Tue 02 Jun 09) Peugeot has released details of its new compact MPV, which is called the 5008 and will go on sale in the UK early next year.
The 5008 will be available in five- and seven-seat forms, though the optional third row of seats is likely to be of use to children rather than adults. The second-row seats can be reclined and moved forwards and backwards through a range of 130mm, and like the ones behind they can be folded to provide a flat load surface at the same level as the rear sill. In five-seat form the 5008 has a load capacity of 758 litres under the parcel shelf with the second-row seats in their rearmost position. Fold down those seats and load the car to roof level and the space increases to 2506 litres - not including the extra 60 litres of underfloor storage in the five-seater. The front passenger seat can also be folded to create a load length of 2.76 metres. The 5008 will be sold with a choice of three basic engines, starting with a 120bhp 1.6-litre petrol co-developed by PSA Peugeot Citroen and the BMW Group (and used, for example, in the MINI). A 156bhp turbocharged version of the same engine is also in the line-up, and according to figures which have yet to be confirmed it will have slightly better combined fuel economy, though this is more a peculiarity of the EU test cycle than a prediction of what will happen in the real world. There's also a 110bhp 1.6-litre HDi turbo diesel available with a six-speed manual gearbox in normal or electronically controlled forms (and giving the 5008 combined fuel economy on the high side of 50mpg) as well as a 2.0 HDi producing 150bhp when mated to a six-speed manual or tweaked to provide a maximum of 163bhp for use with a six-speed automatic. The 5008 will have its world premiere at the Frankfurt Show in August and arrive in the UK at the beginning of 2010.
