New BMW 7-Series Diesel

(Fri 26 Jun 09)

The most powerful diesel-engined BMW 7-Series is available to order now and will officially go on sale in September this year.

BMW 7-Series 31 - 740d M Sport.

The 740d uses a three-litre engine boosted by two turbochargers - a smaller one for quick response and a larger for extra boost under hard acceleration. Maximum power output is 301bhp, which is enough to give this large car a 0-62mph time of just 6.3 seconds (top speed has been electronically limited to 155mph). Despite this, the 740d uses fuel at the rate of 40.9mpg on the official combined cycle and has a CO2 rating of 181g/km.

There will be two versions: an SE, and an M Sport which comes with 19" alloy wheels, extra body styling, sports seats and steering wheel, brushed aluminium interior trim and anthracite headlining. Prices for both cars will be announced nearer the launch date.

Meanwhile, the 245bhp 730d, which accounts for around 85% of UK 7-Series sales, has been revised to give combined fuel economy of 41.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 178g/km (or 40.9mpg and 180g/km for the long-wheelbase 730Ld). The CO2 figures bring the car down into VED Band I, with a resulting £40 drop in annual tax payments. The revised cars will go on sale in the UK in September.
