Audi At Goodwood

(Thu 19 Mar 09)

Audi will be the featured manufacturer at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, an event which takes place just before the company celebrates its centenary on July 16.

Audi Quattro Racer At Goodwood.

That was the date in 1909 when Audi was first registered, but not under that name. Founder August Horch used his own name at first, but a legal dispute established that he wasn't allowed to do that, since it created a clash with another Horch car company which he had formed in 1899 and subsequently left. The matter was resolved by translating "Horch" (which means "hark" in German) to its Latin equivalent of "audi".

Rather than date itself from the name change, though, Audi is quite correctly using the initial registration as the significant day, and it happens to tie in very well with the Goodwood Festival. The celebration will include such exhibits as the Auto Union C- and D-Type racers of the 1930s (Audi having been one of the four companies merged to create the Union), four-wheel drive quattro rally and race cars and of course the more recent Le Mans sports cars. Le Mans winners Jacky Ickx and Allan McNish will be among the drivers.
