(Thu 07 May 09) By far the most popular engine in the Peugeot 407 range is the 110bhp 1.6-litre HDi turbo diesel, and Peugeot has revised that unit to improve fuel economy and CO2 emissions.
Along with Michelin Energy Saver low rolling resistance tyres, the modifications to the engine's ECU mean that combined economy has increased from the current 1.6 HDi's 53.2mpg to a new high of 57.6mpg, and the CO2 rating has dropped from 140g/km to 129g/km. The CO2 change will not have an immediate effect on taxation, since at the moment either version would make you liable for £120 of VED. But as from next year the 1.6 HDi will cost £90 to tax, or £20 less than a 140g/km car, and it will also be exempt from the first-year charge of £110 which would have applied if its CO2 emissions were 1g/km higher. The 1.6 HDi saloon is available in S, SR and Sport trim levels, costing £18,745, £19,745 and £20,745 respectively. There is also an SW estate (with the same fuel economy and CO2 figures) which costs £1000 more than the equivalent saloons in S and SR forms, and £21,995 as a Sport. Peugeot dealers are taking orders for cars with the revised engine now, and first deliveries are expected in June. |
