SEAT Ibiza Bocanegra

(Thu 07 May 09)

SEAT has confirmed at the Barcelona Show that it will go into production with a Bocanegra version of the Ibiza three-door.

SEAT Ibiza 83 - Bocanegra.

A concept version of the Bocanegra was displayed at Geneva last year, where it served as what turns out to have been a very accurate prediction of what the new Ibiza would look like. The production version looks very similar, not least because it shares the concept's black front end.

And that's where the name comes from. Bocanegra means "black mouth", and the name was last used in a 1200cc Fiat 128-based SEAT which was sold in the mid- to late-1970s and had the same colour feature.

Other distinctive features of the new Bocanegra include a new front bumper (with integral foglights), black door mirror housings, 17" alloy wheels, purposeful-looking wheelarches and a rear spoiler. Inside there's a flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel, gloss black trim and aluminium pedals.

Mechanically, the Bocanegra is identical to the Ibiza Cupra, with a 178bhp 1.4-litre TSI super/turbocharged engine (there's also a 148bhp version but it won't be sold in the UK), a seven-speed DSG gearbox and an XDS electronic equivalent of a limited slip differential.

No UK sale date has been confirmed but we can expect to see the Bocanegra arriving over here in late summer or early autumn, priced just below £17,000.
