Mini Half-Century

(Fri 08 May 09)

The very first Mini - a white example registered 621 AOK - has returned to its birthplace to celebrate its 50th birthday.

1959 Mini 621 AOK.

Most people, if asked, would probably guess that the old-style Mini was built at Longbridge, and that was certainly true for over 30 years. But from 1959 to 1968 Mini production took place at the Cowley factory, and that same facility (now known as Plant Oxford) is also the home of the new MINI models which first appeared in 2001.

In its Cowley days, Plant Oxford put together 602,817 Minis in nine years. Production of the new MINI has been much greater - in eight years more than 1.4 million examples have been built, bringing the total Mini/MINI population to over 6 million.
