(Fri 15 May 09) Toyota's latest model, the Urban Cruiser, has gone on sale at prices starting from £14,500.
The name connects the car to the Land Cruiser, and Toyota is marketing it as a smaller relation, but in fact the two are quite different. While the Land Cruiser is a no-nonsense off-roader, the Urban Cruiser is much softer, and aimed principally at singles or couples in their 30s or 40s who "combine an active lifestyle with a high level of environmental awareness but who are not willing to compromise on style". The Urban Cruiser is four metres long and comes in just one trim level, with standard equipment including 16" alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic air-conditioning, keyless entry, rear privacy glass, reclining rear seats and a six-speaker audio system with an Aux-In socket and the ability to play MP3 files from disk. There are two versions, the cheaper of them having a 100bhp 1.3-litre petrol engine and front-wheel drive. That one costs £14,500, or for £16,400 you can have the 1.4 D-4D diesel with four-wheel drive. Both have very similar official fuel economy and produce ardoun 130g/km of CO2. The 4x4 also has rear seats with a sliding function, but for space reasons it has to make do with a tyre repair kit rather than a proper spare wheel.
