(Thu 28 May 09) To celebrate the half-century of its name, MINI has announced that it will introduce three new limited-edition cars.
Two of them are based on the standard hatchback, though with the Chili option pack fitted as standard. The MINI 50 Mayfair and MINI 50 Camden differ mostly in terms of their styling - the Mayfair (pictured), is intended to emphasis the classic Minis "rich heritage and traditional features", while the Camden is meant to look more "futuristic". Both models are available in Cooper, Cooper D and Cooper S forms, and pricing is very similar in each case: the Mayfair costs between £18,415 and £21,280, depending on engine, and the Camden is £250 cheaper across the range. Sales will start in September (though MINI dealers will take orders now) and production will last for just one year. The remaining new MINI celebrates another 50th anniversary - this time that of Cooper's double success in the 1959 F1 World Championship, in which the company was the leading Constructor and Jack Brabham won the Drivers title (it could also be said to be a celebration of the 49th anniversary, since Brabham and Cooper did it all over again in 1960).
This one (pictured) is called the MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50, which probably breaks some record for length of car name, and it's based on the hatchback version of the MINI John Cooper Works. Nearly every optional extra available to a John Cooper Works customer is fitted as standard to this car, and production will be limited to just 250 units, all painted in Connaught Green and available for sale only in Europe. Pricing and an on-sale date have yet to be confirmed. All three of the new MINIs made their official debut during the recent MINI United 2009 event, which was held at Silverstone and attended by 25,000 fans from 40 countries. |
