Euro NCAP exists to judge the safety of cars, but it is occasionally also judged, and has been given several awards over the years. The latest is Prince Michael of Kent's Special International Award for Innovation, which has been presented at the Make Roads Safe event in Moscow.

Prince Michael described Euro NCAP as "instrumental in designing and implementing innovative programmes that save so many lives", with particular reference to the organisation's new and more comprehensive rating system which was introduced earlier this year.

"We are delighted to accept this reward, which recognises Euro NCAP's work in ensuring our testing programme remains current and up-to-date with the latest safety technologies," said Secretary General Dr Michiel van Ratingen. "It makes us all very proud and our hard work worthwhile. Thank you for all the support given by consumers and industry."

The Make Roads Safe campaign is calling on governments across the world to take action to lower the projected increase in road deaths to 2020 by 50%.
