Porsche 911 Sport Classic

(Wed 02 Sep 09)

Just about the only similarity between the Suzuki Swift SZ-L, mentioned elsewhere in today's news, and the Porsche 911 Sport Classic is that production is limited in each case (500 units in the UK for the Suzuki, 250 worldwide for the Porsche). Apart from that, you're unlikely to be confused about which is which.

Porsche 911 77 - Sport Classic.

As its name suggests, the Sport Classic has various features which hark back to Porsches of the recent and distant past. For example, the "ducktail" rear spoiler is reminsicent of that used on the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, the black headlight surrounds refer back to the 1974 Turbo RSR, the double-dome roof recalls that Carrera GT and the 911 Panamericana show car, and the black wheels will remind Porsche enthusiasts of a certain age of the Fuchs rims used in the 1960s.

In other respects the Sport Classic is bang up-to-date. It's based on the Carrera S, but the 3.8-litre engine has been uprated to produce an extra 23bhp, making 408bhp altogether. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard (though the gearlever travel has been reduced for extra sportiness), and all the power goes to the rear wheels, but the body has been widened to match that of the all-wheel drive Carrera 4.

The list of standard equipment is impressive, and includes Active Suspension Management, ceramic composite brakes, an "aerodynamic package", a 13-speaker Bose surround-sound audio, a vehicle tracking system and woven leather upholstery which has never previously been used in any Porsche.

The Sport Classic will go on sale in the UK in January next year, priced from £140,049.
