(Fri 18 Sep 09) The Toyota iQ is such an unusual and innovative car that a visitor to the Frankfurt Show who had just woken up after five years' sleep might be forgiven for thinking that the two examples on display were concepts.
In fact, they are mechanically identical to the production iQ, and have been designed to reveal what Toyota describes as the car's "potential for customisation", which suggests that the company is looking to make some money by offering a variety of styling accessories, as MINI has been doing so successfully. The more dramatic of the two is the iQ for Sports (pictured above). It's painted in an alarming shade of green, and the aggressive look is enhanced further by a bodykit, 18" alloy wheels, a trapezoidal central exhaust tailpipe, purposeful headlights and LED driving lights. Inside, the for Sports has green/grey upholstery, nickel/aluminium trim, illuminated doorhandles, a swivelling dash-mounted spotlight and a 10" LCD touchscreen.
The iQ Collection (pictured above) looks standard on the outside, but its pearl white paintwork is matched by similarly coloured interior items such as the centre console, instrument binnacle and door panels. The leather upholstery features a central seat panel design unique to the show car, and there is also a panoramic sunroof. There is no word yet of any of this being offered to customers, but we suspect it might be in future. Comment on this story on Facebook or Twitter. |
