(Tue 16 Feb 10) MINI's largest production model, the Countryman, will go on sale in the UK in September, at prices starting from £16,000.
The Countryman has been designed to keep customers loyal to the MINI brand when they need a bigger car. 400mm longer than the hatchback, the Countryman also has vastly more interior space, ranging from 350 litres with all the seats up to 1170 litres when they are folded. There are also four passenger doors (as opposed to two for the hatch and Convertible and three for the Clubman) and five seats, though you can specify four seats as a no-cost option if you feel you must. There's a choice of five engines, two of them (in the One D and Cooper D) being the diesels that have been in the MINI range for some time now, while the other three (in the One, Cooper and Cooper S) are the revised petrol units which will be introduced to other models in March. For low list price, go for the One. For low running costs, you want the One D, which has the best combined fuel economy of 65.7mpg. For performance, it has to be the 184bhp Cooper S, which is by far the quickest model, with a top speed of 133mph and a 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds. All of these engines are available in the front-wheel drive Countryman, but MINI is also offering a part-time four-wheel drive system called ALL4. This will be available from launch in the Cooper D and Cooper S and adds £1065 to the price of the former (making £19,875 altogether) and £1220 to the price of the latter (making £22,030). |
