Fast And Frugal Volkswagen Polos

(Thu 18 Feb 10)

Volkswagen has revealed a new hot hatch version of the Polo on the same day that a low-CO2 model becomes available to order.

Volkswagen Polo 64 - GTI.

Like the very closely related SEAT Ibiza Cupra, the Polo GTI uses a 1.4-litre TSI turbo/supercharged petrol engine with a maximum power output of 178bhp. Linked exclusively to a seven-speed semi-automatic twin-clutch gearbox, and using the XDS electronic equivalent of a limited slip differential, it has a top speed of 142mph and a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds, but it also manages 47mpg on the combined fuel economy cycle and has a CO2 rating of 139g/km.

17" alloy wheels - identical to those used on the Golf GTI - are standard, along with various pieces of body styling to make the car look as sporty as it actually is. For handling to match the performance, Volkswagen has fitted revised springs and dampers, and lowered the ride height by 15mm compared with the standard Polo.

Less dramatic but in its way every bit as impressive is the new Polo BlueMotion. This model uses a 74bhp 1.2-litre turbo diesel engine and has the usual fuel-saving measures of higher than normal gearing, regenerative braking, low rolling resistance tyres, some aerodynamic work and a stop/start system. The result is combined fuel economy of 80mpg and CO2 emissions of 91g/km, making the car comfortably exempt from VED. Standard equipment includes manual air-conditioning, cruise control and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

Volkswagen Polo 65 - BlueMotion.

You can order a BlueMotion now, at £14,445 for the three-door version or £15,045 for the five-door, and customer delivers are expected to start in May. The GTI is due to arrive some time this summer, at prices which have yet to be confirmed.
