| Audi's Second e-tron | ||
|
(Tue 12 Jan 10) It hardly seems any time at all since Audi presented its first e-tron concept at the 2009 Frankfurt Show, and now, at Detroit, here is the second one. Like its predecessor, it looks not unlike the production R8, and has two electric motors producing a total of 201bhp, but it's significantly smaller, and it's also impressively light at 1350kg.
The lack of weight is due to the construction, which features fibre-reinforced plastic doors, boot, bonnet, roof and side panels on an aluminium spaceframe body. 0-62mph takes 5.9 seconds, top speed is limited to 124mph, and if you don't approach either of those figures it should be possible to drive for 155 miles between charges. Fully recharging a flat battery takes around 11 hours if you plug the car into the mains, or two hours on a 400v 32A supply. Will you able to buy one from your local Audi dealership in the foreseeable future? No. Comment on this story on Facebook or Twitter.
