| MINI Introduces Countryman | ||

(Wed 20 Jan 10) MINI is about to add a fourth model to its range, to sit alongside the current hatchback, Convertible and Clubman. The Countryman (a name used for an estate version of the original Austin Mini) is a crossover which, in BMW's words, "bridges the gap between the classic concept of the MINI and a modern Sports Activity Vehicle".
That's why it's the tallest MINI yet, and also why the Cooper D and Cooper S versions have the option of four-wheel drive. Most of the power normally goes to the front wheels, but in extreme conditions it can all be directed to the rear ones if necessary. The Countryman also has an unusual amount of interior space. Luggage capacity with all the seats in place is 350 litres, and this can be increased to 1170 litres - 240 more than in the Clubman - when the rear seats are folded. UK prices and specifications have not yet been confirmed, but in Germany there will be a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines, ranging in power from 90bhp to 184bhp, and from past experience it seems likely that the full range will be available here too.
