(Mon 01 Mar 10) Sneaking in just ahead of the rush of stories from this week's Geneva Show, Toyota has announced that the new Auris HSD will have combined fuel economy of 74.3mpg and a CO2 rating of 89g/km, well under the threshold for annual VED tax payments.
These are extraordinary figures for a car the size of the Auris, and they are possible because this particular version is a hybrid (the HSD part of its name standing for Hybrid Synergy Drive). The powertrain is the same as that of the Prius, with a 1.8-litre petrol engine (built at Toyota's factory in north Wales), an electric motor, a battery pack and a CVT automatic transmission.
