| Skoda Reveals New Fabia vRS | ||

(Tue 02 Mar 10) Skoda is using the Geneva Show to introduce its new Fabia vRS to the world. Considerably the most powerful production Fabia yet, it uses a 1.4-litre super/turbocharged petrol engine which produces 180bhp and drives the front wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch semi-automatic DSG gearbox. Traction is aided by the XDS system, which works as a sort of electronic equivalent to a mechanical limited slip differential.
If this sounds familiar, it's because it's exactly the same set-up as used in the SEAT Ibiza Cupra, which went on sale last year, and in the recently-announced Volkswagen Polo GTI. But although the Fabia is mechanically identical to these cars, Skoda has an extra trick - unlike the Ibiza or the Polo, or indeed any previous Fabia vRS, this one is available as an estate as well as in hatchback form. Unusually, Skoda quotes a slightly higher top speed (141mph) for the estate than for the hatch (140mph). The official 0-62mph is the same for both, though, at 7.3 seconds, while combined fuel economy is 44.1mpg. Standard equipment includes 17" alloy wheels, red brake calipers, tinted windows, a diffuser-style rear bumper with twin exhaust tailpipes, a tyre pressure monitor, uphill start assist, and height-adjustable sports seats. UK pricing has yet to be confirmed. Comment on this story on Facebook or Twitter. Skoda Gallery Previous: SEAT Electric Concept Next: Volkswagen's New Sharan |
